It may not be an exact preequel, but the close tie-ins are there to make them very complimentary to each other. One game taking up the item shop side and the other taking up the adventurer side of the game world.
I decided against it though since the game difficulty is rated hardcore/extreme in the reviews I've watched/read. A pity. I really loved Recettear and Chantelise would have made a great companion game to keep playing in that game world, but since I'm turning 50 this year my ol' hand/eye coordination isn't what it used to be.
But about Chantelise, yes it appears to be hardcore; mostly because you don't level up, so it is grind the money and hope loot drops to get further (and try not to die, that helps too). But at the current price, I think it is a good deal, it wasn't reviewed as a bad game (well, some says it's bad because it's hard).
I hope there is more localized game from EasyGameStation in a near future. These guys seem to have talent, and they don't go easy on players (First playthrough of Recettear is kind of hard, didn't pass the last payment)
