Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale

Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale

Is the developer still alive? Is there any chance of a sequel?

The publisher had some personal mental issues a couple years ago, some kind of depression. The game industry is a very hard business and mostly based on luck unfortunately. While bad games are getting a sale boost on release, the good ones can't even make it there. It's a sad story.
Yeah, the game industry is very exhausting, especially for developers.
Heard so much about such cases — Antichamber, Lone Survivor, Stanley's Parable. Inspiration and motivation don't last forever.

The publisher failed on kickstarter and that was the last thing from them. I guess they gave up on everything after that. About the dev, he is still active but unable to find a publisher I guess or a supporter who can work with him for international releases.
The Midnight Sanctuary was recently released, with backing from a major publisher (Sony I think?) instead. Carpe Fulgur is still the localizer.

That's interesting. I didn't know that. The game didn't had much sales it seems tho.
Ah hey, looks like they finally added VR support back in. Sometime in December probably.

Also, yeah, it's Sony Music Japan, specifically a spinoff label they made called UNTIES which is publishing indie games, apparently.
Honestly, if they made a Recettear 2 Kickstarter with a similar artsyle and everything I would back it and I think it could even sell.

The devs (Easy Game Station) seem very much alive, still working on Territoire. Looks like they're going for 2 blog updates per year (summer and winter), but missed the last summer update.

Blog:

Recently (2 years ago) published game on Steam - Angel Express:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/470480/

It was published by a different publisher. From what I understood reading their blog via google translate, they don't seem to care about who the publisher in the west is as long as they do the job.

Quote (via google translate, from the December 24, 2015 update):
Express Angel is a little different from Russetia or Chanterise

We hand over the source and leave the localization program to the sales company

Although Express Angel is a different company from Lessetia's localization company, the story itself has progressed from about the same time as the overseas version of Rusetia

There is no deep meaning in being a different company, as it is an OK because the talk came at that time, and it is not an exclusive contract.

I felt that it seemed like the difference in the way by company, so it is a good study
(Lessetia/Rusetia is probably Recettear)

The Midnight Sanctuary is a different developer altogether btw.

Dunno, apparently they censored alot of stuff due to their personal sensibilities.

They also dropped the ball for Legend of Heroes and delayed the game for several months.

What is said "alot of stuff" [sic]? If this is about Fortune Summoners, here is exactly what got "censored": https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1600367424

FYI the scene appears for a minute (or so, depending on how long it takes you to read the text in the cutscene), and the change isn't story-significant--in fact it's not really significant to anything, because it's not like you could see anything censor-worthy in the original either. Besides, the developer approved it (though if you want to go down the rabbit hole of "it was self-censorship that wouldn't happen if not for bad reasons" and "it's a matter of principle" then so be it).

As for Legend of Heroes, that was specifically Trails in the Sky SC, and that was due to Mr. Dice's personal struggle with depression. The experience is documented in a blogpost that he wrote after-the-fact, and you can read all about it. Far as I know he's feeling better these days. I leave it on you as to whether you want to include that as a criticism.

If you're talking about delays, then it might be more relevant to talk about how they failed to get Midnight Sanctuary's voicework kickstarted (though that's also a "failure" on the part of a fanbase to coalesce in time, arguably) and then that project sorta seemed to sit there for a while at least from the public eye (obviously we don't know when things happened or how much happened); Midnight Sanctuary eventually got backing from Sony I think to get the voicework funded. (Ironically, the original release had no voicework, assuming I'm correct in assuming that it was previously released.)

Meanwhile, Rockin' Android managed to somehow snag EGS's Angel Express and get that localized for a Steam release.

Anyhow, I'd really want Carpe Fulgur to localize and release Okkotos, which is a game that EGS made while working on Territoire. Territoire is apparently still in development, and Carpe Fulgur is sufficiently in touch with EGS to know that they put up some sort of announcement a little while ago (by which I mean a year or two I think), but I don't know any news about it myself. I don't know whether CF has worked on Okkotos, and if not, I don't know why not.

(Main trouble to finding news about localizations is that they're generally not public info until very, very late in the process, basically when everything is already going well enough that stuff can be committed to the expectation of a release.)
One thing people should know about EGS is that their game development is more of a hobby project. I guess something similar to Undertale?

Last post I saw (can't read Japanese, could only figure things out by context) is some screenshots of some 3D models.
keep waiting and wishing someone will try copy this game just not as a easy cash grab but as a good spiritual successor type. if one man can make stardew valley someone can make a new shop management game worth buying and not feel let down.
if it was same game but better combat, id get it right away, like EXACT same game but they did dungeon/combat/boss rehaul
A custom version or recettear inspired indie game would be amazing.
