Was the item red and extra valuable? You'll really want to go low, like 31% for that one.
It's honestly worth taking a loss on minor items to build up your combo. Also, keep a giant stock of expensive items (for high-value sales) and crappy cheap stuff (for low-value sale emergencies).
Some customers start out with pretty small budgets. Little Girl's starting budget is the second-smallest, I think, and Louie's starting budget is the third-smallest.
They get budget increases every time you see a speech bubble with a heart pop up after you have a successful transaction with them. The first budget increase is actually quite substantial.
Budget increases are basically an invisible "reputation level" you have with the customer. This reputation level goes up every time you have a successful transaction, but it goes up a lot faster if you can do it without haggling with them. Even faster if you can guess the price they have in mind to pay.
If you want full spoilers, check the Recettear wiki, but if you don't, just pay attention to the price of stuff that they're buying. Suggest something around those prices, and be a little conservative on your estimates. If you do, you'll soon get little girls buying really expensive books, and equipping Louie with top-tier armor for how far in you are.
Yeah, I think it's that I'm trying to push too expensive items on them, when they ask for "a hat" or "some food". Because even if I sell below base price, they say it's unfair. Damn plebs.
Anyone has an idea what's going on?

"The average location of the Pin Price does not depend on the character, and is as follows: "
Those values are just mean ones(lol) with the highest chance to get at least near pin bonus.
Most people hate the little girl showing up in the shop, since her budget is always low. Budgets only apply when they request items, and Girls start with 600. Just sell them Walnut Breads.
Offer her cheap stuff and take a loss. The combo is everything.
