Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale

People requesting items...
They don't seem to want to pay anything. "I want candy." Okay, here's a candy at base price. "Too expensive!" How about 91%? "No fair!"

Whatttttttt

Is it your first week? If it is your first couple of weeks and you are dealing with the little girl, she has very little allowance until later on. All shoppers seem to expand their wallets as time goes on.

Was the item red and extra valuable? You'll really want to go low, like 31% for that one.

It's honestly worth taking a loss on minor items to build up your combo. Also, keep a giant stock of expensive items (for high-value sales) and crappy cheap stuff (for low-value sale emergencies).
Each customer type has a budget specific to them. All customers of the same type (e.g. all little girls) have the same budget at any time. (Each adventurer is a unique customer type.)

Some customers start out with pretty small budgets. Little Girl's starting budget is the second-smallest, I think, and Louie's starting budget is the third-smallest.

They get budget increases every time you see a speech bubble with a heart pop up after you have a successful transaction with them. The first budget increase is actually quite substantial.

Budget increases are basically an invisible "reputation level" you have with the customer. This reputation level goes up every time you have a successful transaction, but it goes up a lot faster if you can do it without haggling with them. Even faster if you can guess the price they have in mind to pay.

If you want full spoilers, check the Recettear wiki, but if you don't, just pay attention to the price of stuff that they're buying. Suggest something around those prices, and be a little conservative on your estimates. If you do, you'll soon get little girls buying really expensive books, and equipping Louie with top-tier armor for how far in you are.

I'm on my first playthrough, currently at merchant lvl 7. The little girl is the worst! hahaha.

Yeah, I think it's that I'm trying to push too expensive items on them, when they ask for "a hat" or "some food". Because even if I sell below base price, they say it's unfair. Damn plebs.
Always have some bread, some old mufflers, and some rusty weapons on hand, early game. Just in case you need to push a cheap item onto someone, at a loss, and keep the loss to a minimum.

Thanks for the in-depth reply! That helps clear things up. I was just getting annoyed that they were saying the deals weren't fair, but I guess some of them are just nasty and poor.

on my 1st week too... guild master seem really really fickle. I can get JustBonus on 111% or 110% at times... but can't even get NearPin at other times.

Anyone has an idea what's going on?

110% is too high, almost always you should use 105% for maximum merchant XP.

If you want to know gritty details:
http://recettear.wikia.com/wiki/Pricing_Strategies
"The average location of the Pin Price does not depend on the character, and is as follows: "

I've personally got a lot of Near Pin and Just bonuses by selling at 108%.
Ryuu Sep 8, 2017 @ 8:26am
Because that pin price randomly fluctuates as explained in http://recettear.wikia.com/wiki/Pricing_Mechanics
Those values are just mean ones(lol) with the highest chance to get at least near pin bonus.

Most people hate the little girl showing up in the shop, since her budget is always low. Budgets only apply when they request items, and Girls start with 600. Just sell them Walnut Breads.

Offer her cheap stuff and take a loss. The combo is everything.
