BBTAG:
- Story mode is interactive, with "visual novel"-like multiple choices that leads to different endings and a secret ending, with story battles thrown here and there including a final boss battle in each story. Story is mediocre though, so don't get your hopes up.
- Simple gameplay, more casual-friendly with easy executions. A more "pick up and play" game, since it's so simple.
- This game is Arc System Works' latest release, developer support is still there, and the season 2 DLC is near.
UNIST:
- Story mode is literally a visual novel with branching timelines. Arcade mode is there, so individual characters do get their own story. Still meh.
- Gameplay is more technical, this is a "traditional" anime fighting game afterall, and there are tons of sub-mechanics that shaped the metagame (GRD system, shielding, etc, etc). So learning this game will take quite some time.
- This game is mad old, it's been on the PS3&4 and the arcade for years. Developer support is kinda non-existent since no new balance patches will be rolled out.
My personal opinion?
Get UNIST.
BBTAG is fine for some casual fun and all, but it teaches you bad habits that you should never do in a "real" fighting game.
Fighting game fundamentals skill is something that can easily be transferred between games, so by picking up UNIST and learning it, you'll do well in other fighting games too (or at least will be able to pick things up faster in the new game), whereas if you pick up BBTAG first, you'll have troubles re-learning everything, since BBTAG simplifies things too much and the metagame is far too different than traditional fighting games with all the assist system and one button reversal.
TL;DR:
IF, and that's a big if... You're interested in fighting games and are willing to play other games in the long run, get UNIST.
If you just want some casual fun and a "semi"-party game, get BBTAG.
UNIST if you're more into Street Fighter or Guilty Gear.
