The timing is 100% timed to the icon. (else I'm just lucky?)
Some chars are bigger, sone launches higher.. some looks like they start falling down faster. Just focus on the icon and it's (also sound) timing..
..only to have to get as used to a one player 'Crash' that have a different view and timing, and that one actually seems to have a shorter timing-window, and/or a different hight of the launch (?) or it might just be that it's a different view and they are not as common, nor as rewarding in damage.
'good' and 'excellent' can happen on both sides on early/late, and that's why it's so hard to notice where to aim.
Do the tactical missions for 2 and 1 player 'Crash'
It's horrible mindnumbingly boring grinding, but that's when one gets a feeling for where it is and what to focus on.
Offline I get it 95% of the time.. online ..I get nervous and miss everything anyway.. while being poked to death.
