King of Fighters 98 tips for a beginner

Hey, I enjoy playing fighting games, but I am terrible at them. Especially this one. Any advice would be appreciated, but here's some specifics I'd like to know. Sorry, I'm not too bright as far as this game goes.

The game I have is just straight up an arcade port from what I can tell, but with the ability to make some adjustments, for example, 1v1 and number of rounds needed to win. I know that there are things like short hops and all that, though I don't know how to do all of those. Also, are there any specific moves that are gaurenteed to counter? Like, if someone does an arial, is there the equivalent of doing an uppercut in like in street fighter? I've been mainly playing as Kyo, trying to get the feel for things, but I haven't really figured out any definite responses to certain attacks other than rolling away or towards them, except for in a couple cases. Another thing, I know there are grabs, but there isn't really a designated input. I notice as Kyo I can do them if I roll behind the opponent. Now, for weak and strong attacks, I notice Kyo seems to have more range on stronger attacks, but of course, it's not as fast as weaker attacks. Is there anything I should know about when to use weak and strong attacks properly? All I've got is using weak attacks if I can't land a strong attack, but strong ones seem better at countering.

I have been able to beat the final fight in 1v1 and I don't normally struggle until the third or 4th match, depending who I'm up against at the default difficulty, so I wouldn't say I'm hopeless, but I just lack knowledge that could improve my gameplay.

Oh really? I had no idea! Not like there's a reason I specified 98 or anything. I should have definitely asked asked for advice in King of Fighters XIV, since that's clearly the closest match to what I'm playing. After all, I'm guessing they are the community with the best knowledge of older titles in the series.
