It wouldn't help with the softlock, unfortunately. I didn't unlock the spider which costs 3 gems, the bear which costs 3 gems, the chariot which costs 2 gems and the stag which costs 1 gem. They'd need to add something like 10 more gems across the non-final islands to avoid that. I suspect (but can't prove since I soft-locked myself) that the last island would offer a large number of gems. After all, previous Kingdom campaigns were retroactively changed to offer just enough gems to unlock everything.
The easiest way to avoid this soft-lock is to just... not have the Stag cost gems. Have it cost gold. Or better yet, turn it into a "quest" where the player has to fight the Greed in order to liberate the stag. Mission-critical items shouldn't cost a finite resource that the player could spend before getting to them - like I did.
I didn't find any gems, either, nor on the island leading up to it. I suspect (but have no evidence to confirm) that island contents are procedurally generated. This ensures that the player will find stone on the first quest island and iron on the second quest island. Unfortunately, this seems to lead to a situation where all of the game's gems are generated in the first 6 islands or so, meaning the player can cap out early. Which is pretty bad if you happen to do Artemis last.
I chased after it, it switched direction and went off screen.
Instead of chasing it, I went back and it re-spawned on the other side of the Greed Portal, then I managed to walk it to the Cage.
1) navigate to: X:\Users\"Username"\AppData\LocalLow\noio\KingdomTwoCrowns\Release
2) You'll find save file "global-v35"
3) It's gzipped so first you need to add .gz extension to the filename and unpack it with your favorite archiving software.
4) unpacked file open with a text file software
5) find all lines that have something like that: "numStolenGems\":0
6) replace all lines to eg: "numStolenGems\":10
7) save (you don't need to do with the save file anything more after that), start your game and your able to buy those extra gems at merchant with donkey island.
If you're not into manual save editing just reach devs helpdesk and they will fix your save file for you.
The new patch that is now available on Steam fixes this issue for new saves.
