Can't play split screen co-op with one keyboard and one xbox controller

So I can't figure this out at all, I have tried pressing "J" like what the devs said in a post but that doesn't work, I tried using the controller layout thing in steam big screen mode but we still controlled the top player, I have tried all sorts of 3rd party programs to set the xbox controller up to play as second player but the controller also controls first player as well, no matter what I do the only thing that happens is we both are able to control the top player and no one is able to control bottom player. So how do we set it up so that we play as the two people instead of just the top player?

Hey! Does pressing J allow you to enter split-screen? If it does, you should be able to control the bottom player by using the keys H and K for left and right, and J for dropping coins. Let me know if that still doesn't work!

i get the same problem with xbox controllers, so here is a little advice for a simple work around
if you have more than 1 controller, plug 2 of them in and you'll be able to control the second player
(the controller always defaults to player one unless there is one controller active already so you need a second one)

Oh so you still have to play with the hjk keys? I didn't try that but I just find that configuration very uncomfortable and awkward to use. I ended up just using two controllers which I prefer not to do but it works.

I think most people would expect to have one player with controller and one with the arrow keys.. is that possible to update?

Apropos of nothing, but... I only JUST NOW realised that I can play Split Screen by myself. Never even thought to check. That... actually sounds like an interesting way to play. I've always hated having to travel from one end of my kingdom to the other, so having a monarch on each side would be great. Probably overwhelming, but still neat. I should try that.

Is there any way to edit keybinds, though? Kind of not really happy with the keys the game auto-chose for me.
