Can't finish building boat on second island

I am trying to build the boat again, but it seems like I am stuck indefinitely paying two coins, with some wood flying around but nothing happening. There is a thin frame left, but nothing is being built. I guess it's an easy way to get rid of some overflowing coin, but I fear I will never be able to get of of the island again. Is there an end to it or is it a bug?

there is an end to it. each two-coin payment buys a piece of wood that sits on the ground until a builder hammers it onto the ship frame. greed can steal the piece of wood before they hammer it, though, and then you will have to pay for that piece again. (once its hammered, its safe).

on the first island, every piece is automatically purchased when you unlock the boat for 10 coins. the greed can still steal them. on future islands, fewer pieces are pre-purchased for you.

As above, 2 coins pays for one piece of the boat. Once you have purchased pieces, builders will appear to build it. When you can't pay any more coins, that means all boat pieces are purchased and you must wait for the boat to be built before paying 2 more coins to put it in the water.

Ah thank you. It looked like my coins were just disappearing while nothing was progressing and I wondered if it was a glitch. Thank you both for the explanation!
