only norselands costs more money and does not come with the game. deadlands and shogun are free. the DLC does not affect the other 3 flavors in any way, so you can buy it now or later or never.
norselands adds enough new content to justify a second play through. deadlands adds some new stuff, but its not all that much. shogun is basically just a reskin.
i suggest playing normal game, and then buying the DLC if you feel like it and playing norselands.
(edit: if you play norselands first, you might not want to play the base game)
(pedantic note: there is only one DLC, which includes the norselands flavor. the other 3 flavors come included in the base game)
Currently playing Dead Lands and loving the Gebel + Bettle Combo ( unparalled mibiility at forest .) It does not eat anywhere like Gangmin or Griffin , but it looks like a better Stag without the economic bonuses. I think 5 reigns might be easier on dead lands
in deadlands, the bat is both near-teleportation AND a get out of jail free card. the whip is slightly useful too (lizard+whip is a pretty powerful combo), but nothing else is worth it.
norselands has an even more OP ability, but it also adds challenges not found in the other 3. still, on balance, easier, imo.
