There's no plot to speak of. You're a monarch and your objective is to liberate the islands of the Greed by destroying their portals.

For a general guide, you can use the wiki at https://kingdomthegame.fandom.com/wiki/Kingdom_Wiki, or look under the guides section in Steam, but part of the game's design intent is for you to find things out for yourself, so I would refrain unless you get really stuck or confused.

Two Crowns, Shogun, and Dead Lands are all different modes of the same game. They're essentially the same except that Shogun has a different special unit and Dead Lands has an extra mechanic in the form of monarchs with special powers, and different mounts.

I found this guide quite helpful when playing a campaign. There does seem to be a certain pattern you have to follow in order to progress.

I've not been playing long either, 26+ hrs overall game time. I've had a easier time with shogun than the base version tbh, ♥♥♥♥♥♥ my self over too many times, so I i don't think you need to beat the standard campaign first. Some experience does help.

Deadlands is a little harder, you get different leaders with abilities. Some useful, like one that turns into a bat and can travel fast, and some not so much. I'd cut your teeth on the standard campaign and shogun first imho but its up to you. Yo may find you have a better time with it than the others. Norse lands seems to be the one which requires some veteran play time.

I thought this at first, but it's not really true. There are all kinds of things you can do *wrong*, like playing too slowly or not paying attention to the seasons, but there are multiple ways to win, down to diametrically opposite base strategies (e.g. you can win both by rushing and by clearing island by island systematically).
