Difference between vanilla, Shogun, and Dark Lands?

I'm not sure what the differences are in these. I got pretty far in the vanilla version and decided to try Shogun and Dark Lands for the first map and outside of aesthetic changes, I'm not sure what's different.

shogun is vanilla with ninja instead of pikemen and different art. Dark Land is vanilla but you can switch between 4 different characters and they each have their own active abilities, and different art.

And new mounts with special abilities on Dead (Dark) Lands.

Yes, but I think samurai is just a cosmetic change from the knights.

Ninja in Shogun are similar to pikemen, but by most accounts, inferior fishermen and defenders.
