This is highly demotivating. I wanted to introduce my wife to this game, and on the first island its just broken. Very dissappointed...
For the boat, have you paid 8 coins to get on once it's in the water?
I have played and completed the previous kongdom games, so i think i know how the boat usually works,
-> Build boat from parts
-> Pay 2 coins to launch boat
-> 2 Builders start pulling it towards the departure site while up to 3 builders and 4 archers get on
-> Once it reachers its destination, pay 8 coins to get on; any hermits get on
-> Set sail and wait for the map to come up
How does your experience differ?
Check, though you only have to pay 10 coins and get all parts, unlike New Lands where you have to buy a lot more parts after the initial buy

Not sure, what is the destination? The dock on the edge of the map i blocked by a portal (which cant be destoyed without knights)
If it is already at the destination (i.e. boat does not need to go the side dock on island one) then there are no indicators for coins whcih could be spent.
Searching the forums i have come across others having the same problem. In one thread it was said both monarchs must be at the (almost exact) same spot and then the coins may be spent. I will check in the next couple of days if thats really the case, when ever i can convince my wife to try again...
If that is indeed the problem i think it must be made really clear by the game or monarch should be able to pay independently from each other the price for getting on the boat
Once all that is done, go to the boat, and pay... 10? 12? coins to launch the ship. Your monarch will jump on, and hermits will come along and jump in too at this point, I believe.
If you've done all this (you can skip the squires/knights but they're free extra units) and the boat still isn't moving... I have no idea.
Boats are expensive to repair and launch. Just rub your Monarch against it and stuff coins into it until it complies, basically.
Yes this is incredibly unintuitive and not obvious if you are in co op the coins dont show up till you are both there
