How to get the forge?

I was able to get it on island 1 after I expanded a bit and it spawned, after wiping out the greed there im on island 2 now and I can't get it to spawn on either side. Have I not expanded far enough? the portals to the cliffside portal are all out of the way. Do I need to destroy more? also all my walls are at the iron/copper level

I'm pretty sure it just depends on how far your borders reach. With small borders, it can only fit a small number of buildings, with big borders, more buildings.

Tldr: Expand your borders further with walls.

I actually couldn't get the forge to spawn on any of the 5 islands in 2 different savegames. I destroy the dock portal and build a wall as close to the cliff portal as possible. I only get catapults and ninja (shogun obv.). I am not sure if this is a bug or whether I am doing something wrong, but after 20 hours of gameplay this gets rather annoying.

(Therefore I also was never able to upgrade the squires, I tried everything, from making all walls iron to removing all trees to giving the banker 4387589475438579837589347 coins... and then everything ends with a huge mega army of greed appearing which eats half my kingdom and boom, gg, because the forge does not spawn.)

you have to expand more towards the mountain. Also from my experience buildings will sometimes spawn after you close the game. Had a shinobi building move next to my farm once. Also make sure you're camp is fully upgraded

I think there may be an issue with the way the game randomizes things, and in some cases you can get unlucky spacing that prevents buildings from spawning under any circumstances. This hasn't happened to me, but I've not built up every island yet. I would bet the devs are aware of this and will be patching it soon.

What's the forge for?

actually, i normally get the forge to spawn on the harbour side on the map, it doesnt need to be on the mountan side of the castle, once you clear out the other side, skip a wall point or 3 and build out in a bigger area, i find that when you build all the walls, it actually just gets in the way
(it needs a bigger area than the other shops and is always the last one to appear, so expand for it once your ready for it)

It does not matter which side you expand to get the forge, but you need the tier 3 upgrade rubystone/brick whatever you want to call it. Castle buldings are also always dependent on the upgrade tier, I.E. the farmers building will always be available with wood expansion, and pikemen/ninja will always build from a stone expansion. Likewise, the forge is always a tier 3 expansion. This does not mean every wall you build until the forge needs to be tier 3, just the one with the forge.
So this is how I get it reliably: I expand a side that won't cut off the nearest vagrant camp, I just expand with wooden walls and the farmer building should unlock. Then keep expanding with stone until you get the catapult and the pikemen. After that, expand with your tier 3 upgrade. You will assuredly get the forge after a wall or two. Note that the forge won't appear if farm land or the ship is already taking up the space, or if there's too little space. This method works for me every time.

All you need to do is expand -- BUT -- you must ensure that all four of the original walls around the camp are built all the way to iron.

The forge appears in an open segment behind a fully upgraded wall. If you have several fully upgraded walls and the forge SHOULD appear, then restart your game, sometimes the spawn for the forge bugs out, but restarting the game can make it appear. Otherwise, fully upgrade another wall, that should do the trick.
