Disclaimer: I haven't tried shogun yet, but I presume the mechanics are the same.
But you can ensure a portal attack is more likely to succeed by following the army with a sack of coins, and dropping coins onto your samurai as they lose them to keep their health up.
Even though they don't have shields, they have the same block animations, but instead of blocking with a shield, they block with their bare hands (Like a boss!)
