Counterattack Waves, Help!

Does the counterattack wave always come on the same side that the portal was destroyed?
The number of monsters scales with the day or what? How it works?
I tried to destroy the first portal before, on the 2th island, and 3 breeders, 6 floaters and one crown stealer came...

The attack strength depends on the number of destroyed portals on that island and the days too, yes. It is best to attack if you have at least a normal sized army and more than one maxed out walls on each side with catapults. Your dog shows the direction of the attack with its barking when its Bloodmoon. Also can help if you buy fire barrels for your catapults and if you drop golds outside your walls because the greed will pick it up and run away. And activating the Archer and Builder shrines makes a huge difference! Also useful: ballista hermit, horn hermit, war horse

I've had most of my counterattack waves come from the cliff portal when they get the bigger things like breeders and floaters.
