You do not need to kill the first island right at the beginning - you are free to just invest enough time to build the boat, advance to the next island, get whatever upgrade you want (or not), advance to the third, return to the first to kill the portal, then advance to the fourth island.
Experiment - finding out what the islands hold in store for you, finding out about the different statues and horses is part of the joy of this game.
Or it may 'simply' be that you need more archers. Dividing your monarchs time between heading into the woods to recruit more vagrants and building up your kingdom is also one of the decisions you continually have to take.
If this does not answer your questions, describe your situation in a bit more detail, I may be able to help more then.
Best of luck!
The waves shouldn't be able to break through your first wall, if it does, you need more archers and/or upgrades. Oh and make sure you're using iron walls and catapults. Also, not sure what mount you're using but some can make a real difference (the lizard could solo waves before Dead Lands, not sure how it is now).
And yeah the endless night bug makes playing the game really, really annoying.
That's the thing, i have ♥♥♥♥ ton of archers, for example right now the usual horde attacked on a wall that had about 20 archers behind it, but the second those 4 breeders came to my iron wall, it was instantly destroyed and then all my archers died from one blow of the breeder.
Do you buy explosive barrels before breaking a portal? These should make a difference.
Step 2 stock a ton of fire barrels...
Fire barrels destroy breeders, they get lit on fire and burn for massive damage, and your archers should be able to finish them.
Secondly do you have 4+ pikemen defending your wall? If you dont youre doing it wrong.
Thirdly - The gryphon found on the first isle is probably the best mount in game. The wing flap/stun can buy you so much time during horde attacks to whittle down the small blobs of greed.
Also - If you havent gotten/activated the builder/hammer statue it doubles the hit points of all your walls. Giant breeders take quite a while to pound thru blessed walls, all the while your fire catapaults are raining death on them.
your job is then to balance it out so you can afford to get a steady stream of archers and still advance your kingdom
this job becomes a lot easier too if you get yourself the baker hermit as the vagrants will all come to you
