1) Are you playing Shogun? If so, you're completely handicapped during winter unless you already have a banker with a nice stock. Traveling to a new island during fall is going to be really slow/boring/potentially a reign loss.
2) You can only bring 3 sets of squires/knights - do you have iron and knight upgrade available via the forge? If so, spending some days to upgrade the army makes it easier to do earlier portal assaults on new islands, allowing you to push for clearing the dockside in good time and giving you lots of breathing room for completing that island.
3) Are you traveling to a completely new island or is there a base set up already? What is your economy going to look like initially? Again, if you're playing Medieval you can just set up Pikemen and winter will be much less of a problem.
Greed do go by the day count, it also depends on difficulty setting. If you've never been to island 5 and established no base, you might have a small handful of greed the first night but could get crushed the second night. I would wait until after a blood moon and sail out on a peace day before night fall before I made that attempt. That gives you a full day to set up a good camp before the greed get there.
