I play this on Co-op and this could possibly be what's happening. The coin just stays up on my head when I pay for the horn, but I'm not the one hosting the game. Perhaps if my friend paid for the horn, it might work. We can try that out, see if the host can use the horn.
You pay a coin to the horn and all yours knights and archers go to that horn (both of side go to the active horn).
However, they only begin to move to the horn at nightfall (at the moment when the archers go to behind the wall).
They stay on that horn until the end of the night, after that they walk back to the original place.
1 coin = 1 night on that horn (it's not accumulative).
Therefore, if you activated the horn during morning your archers / knights will only begin to move at nightfall.
If the walls are too far away from each other is possible the archers / knights won't be able to reach the horn before the night ends, making the horn partially useless.
Partially because they run to the horn at night and walk to the original place in the morning (some archers run), so you can make they reach the wall if you activate the horn during multiple days.
