Only real other factor is distance from wall to the portal. If it's a particularly long march it might be better to wait for just after a blood moon.
Note that really long walks may have time for the greed to spawn again before they get there, so you may need to wait for after a blood moon (because they don't spawn an attack wave the night after a blood moon), or to move your walls ahead to have a shorter distance to walk.
In addition to such, if you just killed a portal, be a bit careful. There will be a counter-attack wave which is launched as soon as the portal goes down, but the greed from the night spawn with a timer set so they reach your outermost wall just as night falls (assuming you didn't start building a wall mid-day). As such, there have been cases where I've killed a portal, got hit by the night wave, and mistook it for the counter-attack, then sent my knights off to get flattened, which sucked. Note that this can mean night wave, counter-attack, night wave so three rounds of greed in a row, depending on where the portals are relative to your base, before they let up. Supposedly they won't send a wave after a counter-attack but... I've found this isn't very reliable, and it's best not to test it. If the counter-attack lands late in the day, wait for night and clean out the normal wave before attacking again.
Sometimes you get good timing and can clean out portals repeatedly. I've cleaned out 4 in 4 days once before, just slapping each portal down immediately as soon as the knights get back and go through the normal evening wave. Do so at your own peril though - the counter-attacks are "supposed" to be opposite the side you attacked, but I've found they don't follow that rule consistently.
I don't think is actually a promise at all, and I don't recall any dev ever saying so. So It's safest to assume attacks come from anywhere. I'm pretty sure the portal is totally random.
(Coincidentally, that's not too different from my "max recruiting distance," which is about 5.5-6 screens. I define this distance as the distance a villager can walk from dawn to nightfall.)
For example, if I have lizard mount - I could launch attack in the middle of the day, run towards incoming wave and burn it before it will meet with my knights.
This way they will arrive to portal at night, destory it, trigger counter wave - and then morning start and half of counterwave will run back. Only flyers and spawners will remain.
I was lucky enough to find a farm with enough land for 5+ plots! I read a hint on here that recommended to build a Wood-only wall past your farm area to prevent buildings (pike hut, forge, catapult hut, etc) from spawning in your farm area.
eg;
[IronWall]=====[WoodWall]====[Farm]====[IronWall]====[Town >>]
Definitely not. I routinely see retaliation waves pop out of standing portals.
