You cannot clear any of them at first until you get something that lets you permanently close the mountain portal though, and you can't get gems on island 1 anyways. You're fine.
Also, if you lose your crown, you also go back to island 1, and you don't lose all of your progress.
Moral of the story: If your workers aren't smart enough to run to safety after their work is done, find replacements. It's cheaper in the long run.
Edit: I ended up on island 1 with all the walls missing, but the towers still in place, and most of my archers still around.
Stone mine are on second island, and without it you won't be able even to attack portals.
And to truly complete island you will need to reach island 4 first.
