Basically each island gives you a certain progress for the late game, also if you left an island you should consider going back to activate monuments etc. Don't spend your coins on the useless hermits from the get go, save it for later. Just play the game to find out for yourself, it's much better and more fun to discover ♥♥♥♥ on your own tbh.
Don't forget the Builder Statue! It is really good.
It's mostly the same, but I take the Stag. I like to scout the Islands and have most of the times a forest inside my walls.
The gryphon is great for the portal raids, since it can "graze" anywhere, you won't be caught out trying to escape.
The stag *is* nice for scouting islands for the first time, I will admit.
That seems like one hell of a sprint. Have you managed it before first Winter? I don't know if I'm just a slowpoke but that seems crazy fast to me. Are you securing the dock on any of these islands? I'm getting hit with Winter on island 3.
Go to island 3 for builder shrine and baker. Ignore gem chests after this point.
Go to island 4 for metal upgrade and ability to complete the game.
Finish islands 4, 3, 2, 1 in whatever order is most convenient.
Finish island 5.
The only change I think I'll make is that I'd probably keep the baker unactivated until I needed him on island 5. I was worried that some generations of island 4 might necessitate a baker but it doesn't seem to be the case. Just island 5.
Island 1 I can leave by day 3-4 at best. Similar for Island 2 given the cash you can bring from Island 1. My current run, where I picked Shogun. I got to Island 3 before Summer started.
Nice thing about this, being vagrants, they have no coins or tools for the Greed to steal, so it's much safer than going out and recruiting them.
I'd argue the baker is by far the best of the hermits. The bakery is invaluable for recruiting lots of vagrants safely.
When there is a loaf bread in the bakery, all vagrants will be drawn too it. As in, they will travel *from* their camps *to* your bakery to eat the bread. As BrknSoul mentioned, if you make sure to recruit them before they can eat the bread, then you'll be able to get away with a single loaf.
As for why this is useful, it's because - especially on bigger islands, it removes the need for you to travel afar as well as the risk of you ,or your new hires getting caught out by the greed while returning to your walls.
This, but my stratagy beyond island 3 is to rush down either 4 or 5 (being the biggest islands with the most portals) before The Greed evolve too much. I also personally pick up the farming statue.
I did this order
1 > 2 > 1 > 3 > 4 [cleared] > 1 [cleared] > 2 [cleared] > 3 [died] > 4 [back to 4 again to reduce the decay time and as a fall back plan if i have to evacuate from island 5] > 5
I cleared all portals before I leave island 1, 2, 3, before I get the bomb tech on island 4. This takes quite long.
I didn't get to island 5. I died on my 2nd time on island 3 (meaning I cleared 1,2). However at this point I have reached the 3rd winter. (Winter wasn't really a problem) the problem was the Greed became really strong, especially during Blood Moon. This was day 240ish.
It was probably doable. However I find just rushing from 1 > 4 to get the bomb without clearing any portal or reinforcing the base, when you come back to 1, 2, 3 to clear it, the greed has already become quite strong and the game become doubly difficult.
My rationale of clearing everything except the cliff before I get the bomb is that once i get the bomb and i come back, i just need to bomb the cliff. However if you take too long, you will have 80+ greeds for nightly raid, and an army of breeders and flyers.
- Island 1: i rush it ( upgrade to wood castle, fill the bank at max, go full pouch then leave) , around day 6-7 usually.
- Island 2: same here ( i don't upgrade to stone and don't do knight either since island 2 have nowhere near enough vagrant with only 2 camps), leaving around day 8.
island 3: i build my camp nicely , take as much as i can for the next island (usually i do the lighthouse too).
- Island 4: i complete the map, clearing everything but the cliff portal ( because tha fcking lizard killed me two time here with the run and ability switched so i die in the exploding portal).
For me the winter hit right there so i usually stay on island 4 the whole time ( simply because it's there that you have the most pikemens usually).
AT the end of winter i leave island 4 with 12 gems (you have barely enough coins to pay the ship, so 9 gems is enough if you don't want problems).
Here i return on island 1 and here come the gems, i take everything on island 1 (because the hermit is good, the shrine and the gryphon are insane).
The start is rough because nothing is left and your puch is almost empty because of the gems, and the greeds hit hard from the get go.
I complete the island (portal and lighthouse), build as much as i can for the ship and go directly chalenging the final island.
Island 5 : here come in handy the last 3 gems you have (absoluty not necessary though, just a safe measure) because it is easier to get the unicorn if you don't find the others gems chest easily enough.
i proceed the same as with island 4 (simply because i'm not sure it is even possible to do the cliff portal without dying at all )so everything is done, except the last portal.
I were hit by the winter here which kinda sucked but better that it happens here than right after this.
Here i go back to island 2 to clean it, kinda had a lot of trouble here because of a crappy map + stupid engineers but meh ( blood moon are horrible though, be ready for mass floaters).
Proceed the same with island 3.
Here i go back to island 5 just to get the gryphon back ( i don't do the portal because of fear ).
go to island 4 to finish it.
Then finish island 5 . done .
(i'm currently at island 2).
for the gems upgrade i do :
island 1 , nothing, since you have no gems, then in the next one i take the scythe shrine + the stag, (♥♥♥♥ the hermit i can't even do farm usually with their ♥♥♥♥♥♥ placement), on island 3 i the builder shrine + the hermit (best hermit ever. period.), warhorse sucks , leave him to die, don't buy him either.
Island 4 , take the lizard if you want, while in itself it IS a good mount the fact that they switched the run and the fire breath killed it for me, i died too many times because of this, anyways i take the hermit, but i don't bother with the bear his stamina is a pain in the butt.
island 1 take what you can, give nothing back (seriously, take everything though.).
island 5 , i take the unicorn to prepare for winter and the return to island 2 and 3, but you can keep the gryphon if you really want.
For the shrine, it sucks, seriously, it will cost you so much to rebuild your knight everytime, but i take it because they are badass, even if it's dumb.
