Squires not taking sword to become knight

Currently on the 1st island, already got the steel upgrade.
Have 3 squires on (safe) dockside and 4 on the portal side.
Already paid for 4 swords to be made but none of my squires are picking it up, i suspect that maybe the steel workshop is close to the main tavern but expanding further out doesnt seem to respawn it.
Should I send my squires out to the big portal to hopefully 'reset' them?
It's already winter but i have alot of ninja's and coins in the bank.
What should i do?

I had the same problem, if I remember correctly it got fixed when I went to other island and came back.

Try restarting the game first, it usually works with a lot of bugs.
