You gave a GREAT (and at the same time obvious) suggestion. We just need a small community, but united and strong, to be able to relive the multiplayer of this game.
But how is it possible to create a new master server and configure the game to redirect recognize the new master? Is it easy?
It would be fairly easy to reconfigure the game to recognize the new masterserver, it's just a small change to the config files (at least on Deus Ex and Unreal Tournament, I still haven't tested doing anything to Snowblind.) However, setting up the masterserver itself is a lot more of a complex process, one I can't even begin to figure out.
Well, if you really can set this up for Snowblind, that's a big deal. Now all we have left is someone with good will who knows how to make a masterserver. And then it will be possible to resurrect the multiplayer of this game again. :)
It actually takes more money than know-how basically to pay for the dedicated server to host the master server files. I'll be in touch...
Is it possible, for example, to have Snowblind recognize an existing master, such as UT'99 today? If not, what would cause such impossibility? If that were possible, then it was only to create a dedicated server (it could be a homemade, for testing), and make the game recognize the master and see if it works.
I'm saying this because I'm a layman on the subject.
In the case of the Deux Ex GotY, I know that today it has its own master, so this problem with it has already been solved for some years.
I wouldn't have permission to use the same DNS names and Domain names associated with the game that the master server used. I'd need control over those details from the back end to make it work that way.
Yes, we all know that thanks.:)
Project Snowblind did NOT use Gamespy. It used Eidos's own service. If it did use Gamespy, there are several alternate servers which emulate it that you can connect to, such as Openspy, via exe edit, DNS change, or host file edit.
