Red Ivan's execution on minions changed

So I'm playing red ivan pretty sure late game , but I saw some of my optional objectives like execute workers. Ivan used to just grab the minions and choke them now he pulls out a mini cannon like gun instead and I don't like it cause it damages my stuff is there a way to change his weapon?

When you advance in the story, Ivan implements the HAVOC into his own weapon and no, there isn't a way to switch it back.
Also, I've noticed he doesn't seem to actually use the explosive on his enemies, just when executing minions. Because it'd be real nice to have a more powerful version of his rocket powered fist when in battle...
