Whoever says "hard mode is easy" is just using some of the tricks or strategies to make it like that. For example, as i said earlier, i'm beating my enemies with IRIS and Genius before they actually make their first steps to the bridge. On my next playthrough, i'll try to focus more on distracting agents and reducing resolve.
Just remember, saboteurs and rogues will mostly leave one target and also atack the targets behind, so it ruins the strategy. Maybe that's some weird stuff, but to avoid that i was killing all of the agents, which was only calling soldiers (and soldiers cannot do anything against it). You can always pause the game, - it took me around 30 hours to complete Red Ivan on hard difficulty with collecting all of available henchmen (for achievement). Still not that much, considering the fact that i was pausing for building and some other stuff.
I'd recommend you to start game on Hard Difficulty with Red Ivan, - he's superstrong, +his "Old School" ability is great for hitting multiply enemies. Just remember, - when you send IRIS outside your base, you shoud manually force her to attack the enemies, otherwise they will focus on Genius who's staying behind.
As for Island, people recommend third one, it has only one entrance. As for me, i was playing on second one, - agents (except the early stage of the game), soldiers, rogues and saboteurs are only coming from the bottom left (there is a loooong-long bridge out there, at the end of which IRIS is waiting for their arrival near the door, right before they arrive). Most super agents also come from that side, but Olga and most side mission enemies are coming through your cover operation on the right part of your Lair.
And the most important part - you build henchmen table near the door to your Lair, so IRIS and Genius rests properly before new enemies arrive, and then, you send them again.
I typed too much, but i really wanted to share it, because when i got used to this strategy, it made me feel really protected.
Well, idk how the soldiers "disappear in seconds". As was claimed earlier, 5 soldiers are capable of destroying dozens of muscle and nearly hundreds of minions. Since waves are frequent, it's just nearly impossible to train enough muscle to protect your lair... I had enough tables, guard posts, and of course, needed cameras, and my troops got completely destroyed
About you not being able to replace the minions in time, you have to make the investigators spend as much time as possible before they kill themselves for your guards.I leave a zone that they can walk around freely before being tagged in zones that are more restricted.
Soldiers will ignore your casino, but you shouldn't get soldiers unless you kill the investigators.
You should have no heat rooms first so they can wander a bit inside the base before being distracted back to the casino for round 2. You should also focus on having a lot of nonlethal traps to drain the rest of the stats.
You definitely do not want to make it right next to the door. The waves will come too fast. Even if your minions defeat the agents. Some minions will at least need time to heal and regen their other stats. Also retrain any lost. Even using the IRIS approach all henchmen still have to regen their stats. You want to always give agents some time to wonder. Probably one of the biggest things to remember is that agents have a love for doors. They will walk down a dead end hallway just to open the last door.
