Stairway to the basement

On map 1, the one with the basement, I've just now completed my first stairway ever to level 2, so I know how to make them. But I can't see a war to make one go down. Is there a secret to getting down to the basement, something like you have to go to the top level first or something?

Also, how do I mine the gold down there? Very high research unlock?

My best guess would be that you are trying to place the stairs in a location which would require you to dig through dirt you aren't able to dig through yet. Try to place your stairs so they go to the lighter color dirt areas. If you look at the basement, there are only a few spots so you may have to move things around.

If you look closely, there is about four or so different colors of rock to dig through. You can dig through the lightest immediately, the others require research. I was able to dig to the basement on the map you're talking about by researching one or two of the dig options (I forget which). If the rock in the basement can be dug through, you will see a check box instead of an X on the staircase. I was able to create a side corridor near both the casino and the hole where your doomsday device goes, and tunnel down that way. Hope this helps.

Provided you have the right tech to mine through the rock you can go up or down wherever the layers match, Basement layer might not be exactly the same shape as layer 1. When you have the stairs selected the ghost will show an up and down stair and either an X, a yellow ! or a green tick, a green tick next to down stair allows you to build downwards.

As for mining the gold, just build a corridor over it and it will be mined, may need better tech to access some of the deposits through the surrounding rock.
