Same here. I absolutly love Divinity O.S. but it doesn't quite capture the over the top almost campy feel to those old JRPG's (Well its pretty Campy - just not in the same way)
But yes i've played Vandal Hearts and Vandal Hearts II (which i personally remember even more fondly than the first one). There actually were a lot of great hidden gems that while probably not on par with the most popular ones were still pretty good.
Kartia: The Word of Fate for example. I even have fond memories of games like Monsterseed or Eternal Eyes, even if those weren't as great.
Anyway i 100% agree i'm so glad this game exists and brought back this genre in such a fun way.
Finished that one also.
I think some names just got duplicated into VH, probably out of a translation thing , maybe not the same actual characters. After doing some research on it …
