That said though, if you want to just level up you can play on Horde mode normal...which in it ironically normal horde mode is set to hard in the rest of the game, and hard horde mode is set to what would normally be "Insane". This is the same for the challenge mode difficulties.
When you're starting, you absolutely should be starting on normal or easy. It IS significantly easier than Hard, but that's the idea. Basically, this game is like Left 4 Dead where you should be spending that time learning the mechanics of the game, how to deal with each 'special' zombie, and how to work with the team. Once you got all that down, please come help us on the 'normal' levels on Hard - we could use the help!
On the other hand, there have been an influx of people starting the game who go right to Hard or Challenge missions at level 1, and cause the game to end early, which reduces the reward significantly for EVERYONE. I'll be kind and not point out the many examples of this I see, but it's a team game at it's heart instead of a FPS shooter, and I find it very hard to believe you can help your team without knowing what you're supposed to be doing.
So basically, take your time to learn the game, come join us on hard (and above when you're ready), and by doing so you'll have a better chance of finishing missions and getting full rewards, as well as increasing your chances of people friending you to play in the future!
In CHALLENGE MODE and horde mode, the "normal" difficulty is what would be hard in the normal game. In fact if you start a game on normal challenge mode and then go to the main menu it will have the difficulty of the last mission you played listed as skulls. 3 skulls being hard. If you start a "hard" challenge mode it would actually be 4 skull insane difficulty. I did not say a level 1 should be doing challenge mode on hard without atleast knowing what to do first.
If a level one wants to join horde mode to level up, most veterans that still play don't care and will help you. In fact, if you see me in a game...just join. I don't care who I play with or what level they are.
Edit: I also recommend playing as a medic at first. It will you get you used to using equipment for yourself and your team to help everyone stay alive longer. But its just a matter of preference.
Only when you feel like you leveled everything you like or feel confident about beating specials you can start trying your luck with Hard.
