Can your friends play without the DLC?

I did own dlc as host, but it just auto changed to episode 7 and said not all players own dlc.

For me it worked, i as the host was owning it + one friend also did buy it, the 3. friend did not buy the dlc but we were able to play Episode Phoenix just fine.
