Nowadays, im gonna be completely honest here, compared to the start to now... no. The game has lost literally everyone. From poor performance, cheaters, the DLC and more... it just lost so many people.
Right now there are 1,500 (roughly) people on steam as of my comment right now whcih means, technically, the game is NOT dead but it shows a LACK of playerbase behind the game nowadays (on steam anyway). I do not know how many people are on EPIC e.t.c so that could be a low number compared to the other storefronts.
I went on Epic recently to see if it was as bad/long as you said it was and yeah, took me 27 minutes to find a full group of players.
Also, side note, once you unlock everything.... theres no point in playing anymore. It turns into a boring, generic zombie shooting game. This is my honest final word about the game.

I also play from day 1, I even pre-ordered it on Epic back in April 2019.
What you say is simply not true. Game runs fine, cheaters were only in PvP, but that was from the beginning, since Devs didn't add any anti-cheat.
Any PvP on PC need anti-cheat, that's it.
Matchmaking queues are longer, sure, but this is 5 year old game. You always see players count to drop after such amount of time.
Most people play Daily Challenges now days, and regular maps on Hard or Insane difficulty.
Also don't wait till lobby is full, most people join games in the middle and plays a few maps later.
The game has cross-play with all PC stores and both consoles, that is, Epic, Steam, Windows Store, PC Games Pass, Xbox Console and PS5 console. You need to enable it in game settings.
Said a person who played 2000 hours in said game. Everything what's good ends at some point.
The game must be freaking good it you played it 2000 hours.
I myself have around 800 hours over 5 years.
But I get it you need a sense of progression, I myself don't like to replay completed games, yet I played co-op campaign like a hundred times in this game
Each match is different due to variety of classes, weapons, mutators, and most importantly other players with which you play together.
You still can fins some good players and full servers. Below a video i record a few days ago.

Also WWZ should get some boost of new players in coming days, since the game was updated on Game pass.
It might be a wide guess, but they might have scaled down the numbers of servers. I assume they rent servers is from some vendor like Amazon Could and if players numbers dropped down, they just rent less severs. It doesn't make sense to pay for 1000 dedicated servers if only 100 is active during that time, due to lower player numbers.
Also comparing queue times between players does not make much sense since game is region located. It will first try to match you with players in your region, either it is US, EU or Asia. Queue times for these regions might be different for variety of reasons.
I'm what would be called a "veteran player" -- I got the game on Epic when it was still an exclusive there, and have been playing fairly steadily for the past 4 years or so.
Up until December 5 (when the latest DLC was released), I played the game all the time and never had any problem picking up random teammates for Daily Challenges, Horde Mode, Quick Play, and even for chapters I selected as long as the difficulty wasn't set at Extreme.
Now I find the game unplayable (or, not worth playing) with all the bugs, imbalances, broken classes, performance problems, networking problems, and so forth. I suspect many veteran players have recently drawn the same conclusion.
I had a lot of fun times with the game and definitely got my money's worth -- but for the developers to send the game off the rails at this late stage is pathetic. I almost bought the latest DLC the instant it was released, but decided to check out the state of the game first. Glad I didn't fall for that.
The developers don't seem to give two figs about fixing it, either. It's disgusting.
PS -- @ Eight-Six: the Steam charts, though showing some recent fall-off in player count, is not an entirely faithful representation, I would think, because like me, a lot of veteran, more enthusiastic long-term players started out on Epic and continued to use that platform. (If Epic has an analogous feature to the Steam charts, I don't know about it.)
