Game switching characters?

So, my friends are having this issue where their survivor character switches after we ready-up for a campaign level, and it's annoying them quite a bit, because they want to play as characters they want. Does anyone know what causes this, or a fix for it, so I can help them out?

it happens when the party leader is using the characters belonging to the chosen campaign. party leader should switch their character from the default.

Currently, I was playing a Japanese character in the Russian campaign. I am unsure if that would be the reason.

it happens in horde mode as well. if the party leader stays as the character given when the mode is selected everyone will change to the characters of the same group. party leader has to switch from default.
