Random ping spikes online?

Why are we forced to connect to a central server? Keep getting spikes in ping and character keeps running against walls and can't make any actions. Sometimes even getting disconnected. Tried hosting and still same issues. The servers used seem pretty terrible. Why isn't there P2P netcode?
