Just how violent and disturbing is this?

No, no, and maybe? Torture can be pretty open to interpretation. But if you mean just straight up American horror film torture of people being strapped to things and pulled apart, then . . . no.

Visually, it is tame. More "creepy" than bloody. Psychologically it is not tame, meaning the instances violence is involved are more impactful and stressful. Hence the depression warning. No dismemberment or entrails though.

There are a few brief text-only instances that are very graphic though. Especially if you do data-mining or look at Reddit posts of decoded files/images.

physical/visual violence: if you are able to watch some standard horror movies, you should be able to endure it. Its more about the timing and combination of story/visuals/audio rather than some gory slaughtering

Impact is not as strong if you have glimpsed into spoilers. I rushed in real quick before I can be exposed to spoilers, it was good stuff, a bit like having two seasons of AHS crammed into your brain.

it's no gorefest, but there is some violence. tho it isn't very impactful alone, accompanied with the psychological aspect it is very much so. don't go into it if you're particularly mentally unstable, basically? because the topics you come across will become 100x more disturbing.
