I don't think the game will have much of an effect on someone who impatiently waits for "something" to happen.

None of the effects mean anything to you if you have not gotten emotionally invested in the characters in the first place.

And this will only happen if you actually read and embrace all the dialogue rather than just cross-reading or even clicking it away unread.

The point where it starts making you feel uneasy starts several days before Sayori commits suicide. But you wouldn't notice if you don't pay attention to the texts and contents of the poems.

I disagree, as someone who spent 2 hours playing wondering "When does this get good" skipping through a lot of the dialogue (All I had to go on were slight 4th wall breaks and the title screens message). The game hooked me when Sayori killed herself even though I didn't really care much about the characters.

Now as someone who is pretty much hooked, I can say that even if you don't find the opening interesting, once it gets to that point and broke that expectation of going nowhere interesting even if it did get weird. I'd say keep on it and if you really get to that point and find yourself still bored, then maybe it isn't for you

I entirely agree with this. Everything in the story has much more impact if you take the time to read what's going on and be invested in the characters.

If you're looking for a few quick scares, this isn't the kind of horror you're looking for.

@CrabMan: While it very well may be the case that you still got something out of the game, I highly doubt that it was anywhere near as impactfull as for someone who actually read all the Sayori-dialogue, tried to empathize with her feelings and thus got emotionally invested in her.

None of the things that happened in the 2nd part made me feel as uneasy as the ultra-realistic depiction of Sayori's depression.

I got a bit more into the characters since I was reading the story out loud for my wife who is napping on my lap. Glad she fell asleep at the confession...

Only somehwat in route 2 now, but it's getting a bit rough to play since I'm psyching myself out and getting tense, but I was saved some horror from Route 1's end since I had a feeling of where it was going.

Sounds like this wasn't for you, then. Her condition is a fundamental part of her character, and since this focuses on the characters themselves, someone who isn't willing to try to understand them wouldn't be into it.

Well i mean later in the game you find out that Monika is behind everything and coded to make them act depressed and suicidal and mentally ill, so since you know its all fake any character development you had and built through the story kind of just disappears

I understand where you're coming from, but it's not -all- fake; Monika just made the bad stuff worse.

Monika herself admits that she's not very good at editing things. There's no way she'd be able to program believable depression, for example. (As a depressed person, myself, Sayori's admission felt pretty legit and in-line with what I've seen from others who've opened up to me about their own.)

Sayori really is depressed, Monika just drives her to suicide. Yuri does have an obsessive personality (just look at how passionate she is about books and knives) and Monika cranks that to 11 in act 2. Natsuki has an abusive father, and Monika takes it further by not having him even feed her in act 2 (although you only learn about this if you write poems for her.)

I find it doesn't cheapen anything, or make anything go away, myself. It just puts a magnifying glass over it.
