You literally have a PARASITE attached to your own body for 70% of the game.
You spray acid on a bunch of long dead corpses to melt the corpses and make way.
You squish demonic babies for fertilization purposes.
You hatch eggs that hatch things that you later decide to butcher or not.
Etc etc etc.
Also you shape the world, you open doors and push stuff... Out of the way, lmao. (All right I concede that one. But you also launch the Big Mommy creature, definitely changing things.)
The game never tells you where you are, what you're doing and why, or what those monsters are and where they came from. Like, why is it important to repair that machine during Act 1? Why was doing that strange ritual at the end important?
I will admit, thinking better at it, the game DOES have enviromental story telling. Like the corpses witht he same umbilical cord around you when you spawn with the next Scorn Guy. And I will admit, having the parasite be both your gun AND your inventory was really clever. But I really don't feel like that's enviromental story telling. It's definitely enviromental world building, and I adore that type of stuff, but it's not telling you the story. To understanding where you are or what you're doing and why, or what happened to the place and why, you'd have to read the artbook.
It's a great experience for people like me who didn't back the project or, in my case, didn't even know about it until a few weeks ago.
I wish it had more of everything since I do love what I got and I really enjoy the mystery and that not everything is explained.
Right? it's the same for me. I REALLY love what we got and the mystery and the unique world. But it's just....the game still feels like it's incomplete. And it's objectively true that it's nowhere even NEAR what they promised repeatedly in kickstarter posts. I really wonder what happened in the development background, because I have the feeling that, if this game is actually just Part 1, even it feels unfinished.
Just an example for such story-making: As the Forest was in EA the shadow of the protagonist had no head - just a mistake, but as there was no story at the moment, we decided, that actually he died as the plane crashed, and that a body, which was in one of the caves is his - was all false, as you know.
Don't listen to Ebb software's shill.
I Noticed that too. The game has LOTS of world building. Like, you get hints of this world and the civilization and culture and all that, but there's zero story (enviromental or outright told) to tie everything together. It's like they mashed together all their ideas and concepts, and forgot that there's supposed to be glue to make sure those parts don't just fall apart
That's the same conclusion I'm arriving too. They probably ended up biting more than they could chew, and released an incredibly rushed build of the game so they wouldn't miss the promised release date. But I fear they'll never admit that. Specially with Ebb Software's history of poorly handling criticism from their community.
Yeah, but i'm talking about how they handled criticism from their kickstarter. Ebb Software has a really bad habit of going radio silent for months, sometimes over a year without a single update to the point people thought Scorn had gotten cancelled and they were ghosted. So naturally they started asking more and more and more for updates.
The devs posted on their kickstarter page, basically having a meltdown, bashing and attacking their own community (something along the lines of them being unable to wait and pressuring them and how constant updates goes against the spirit of the game or something like it), which ended up causing a torrent of people demanding refunds.
I still don't get why they did that. They dissapeared for months without a sound, so of course people would start asking for info.
And when you don't have anything interesting to post, there's no posts.
I for once thought that the game were dead, but it's a game in the end, why press peoples and be mad for news?
Altho now that I know they cut out half the game, I can understand where that frustration came from. Dev was probably butthurt about compromising their vision under the demands of legally protected investors and took it out on the innocent KS backers. I would’ve been perfectly fine to let them work a few more years if I knew it would result in a complete product.
Ebb should be glad we backers supported them for so long. Unless they finish the game, I’m not supporting their future ventures. Some apologizing would be nice too.
