After buying the upgrades for 1% more damage with each kill, increased damage with each consecutive hit and double darts its my main trap for almost every map.
To summarize my experience after 700~ hours and 15~ ascendancies: Dart trap needs a major upgrade to be useful in mid-late game, or against strong rune sets. A single axe or chakram trap can do more dmg than 20 (probably even 50 or 100) dart traps in the late game, and even bolt trap is far stronger and more flexible for different strategies/synergies.
Even with the Unique item that gives 15% chance of chain lightning the dart trap is hella, hella weak outside of the early game.
Even in the base game the Dart Trap tended to be the trap you'd throw away and not look back at after a point.
