Surface question.
Ok so ive played a bit but i haven't played terraria much but this game seems very similar from the little ive played of that game...i really should go check that game out again...anyways...

So there seem's to be a bad thing with the surface that once i've set up a "Home Base" AKA I build a door into a large hill and hollow it out and then put 3 layers of earth between said "Exit" door and myself.

So eventually i need to open said "Exit" door to find more food. So i unbrick the "Exit" door and i find the surface world is full...FULL of mobs. Which promptly kill me because so very very many mobs.

My question here is ... Am i stupid for unbricking the door? Should i be able to find seeds for a subterraian farm if i "Delve" deep enough? Am I playing the game completely wrong?

So far the first hour of content is great but then i die either from starvation or mobs outside the "Exit" to the surface.

Should i regularly go to the surface and kill mobs?

I dunno games fun though i hear it's like diablo a bit later on so is the crafting aspect super light in this game ? like not as important as terraria or starbound? and i can almost safely ignore it ? or is it deep and complex...and its a diablo-like?

:)

Also being able to shift|+left click your mouse button to send a hotbar item to inventory and from inventory to your hotbar would be super handy in my humble opinion...

Yes i noticed that my weapon does no damage to commander keen there...i guess i need a better weapon...and food...lol

Also do things on the surface respawn like rocks/sticks/carrots?

I also think the progression for tools is wrong why give me a hoe when i won't use that till much later it would be much better if Brevik would give me a axe or a pick axe that early on, and then have me construct the hoe and either axe or pick axe....i think he should be giving out the axe for free and having us construct the hoe and pick axe....

I just want to reiterate the importance of the starting quests. Consider making a new character just to play through them again, it only takes minutes (with the exception of the meat and mushroom ones) and they teach you valuable things about the game.

You should have absolutely no trouble against the surface monsters with your starting weapon. The improved weapon and iron armor are more than enough to safely kill Commander Vile.

Something to keep in mind, Survival mode needs you to be proactive and go exlpore out there to survive. It is not suited for overly defensive playing. If the monsters don't get you, hunger will. Consider spending some time in Descent mode and see how it plays for you. Even if you prefer Survival mode, Descent will help you get more familiar with the game in a safer environment and this will help you no matter what you chose to play.

To get your feet wet in this game, i recommend playing on Descent game style. You won't have to be concerned with food, sleep, etc. It's combat only. After you've gotten a good grasp of this side of the game, at that point is a good time to try out the full experience of Survival.

I prefer Descent game style in general, and have enjoyed this game a lot more than my playthru on Survival.

It's possible there may be more fine tuning as the game is patched... but as is, my opinion is that survival game style makes the game frustrating and takes a lot of the free-form fun away from the game.

I'd like to see hunger and sleep levels degrade slower. The current patch degrade levels are ridiculous in my opinion for a game that is as fast paced and action packed as it is when you get further down and further in difficulty.

thanks to everyone providing tips in this thread.

I like the survival mode im actually thinking of just making a HC character(s) just to try out the different classes because that's "Fun!" for me i don't mind restarting over and over its more fun then a creative mode where nothing matter.

Just my opinion...i assume Descent mode is like a creative mode yes?

Descent mode is PVM without the sleep/eat aspect of the game.
Unicron Supreme Jan 11, 2019 @ 3:15pm
PVM?...im a boomer ... im sorry...:P

Also would like to know is this game like very light on crafting stuff? In my mind it would almost have to be, because apparently everyone is chasing drops off mobs right?

Also who has a problem finding iron ore and cobblestone? It's pretty abundant...last play thru i had like 23 odd iron bars i didn't know what to do with...

PVM = player vs. monsters

Descent mode is really fun, and is very reminiscent of Diablo. It doesn't give you unlimited materials - it just takes out hunger and sleep. There is a difficulty trade-off in that sleep no longer heals you, and there is no Pepin the Healer kind of thing, so if you get hurt, you need to use potions that you find or an ancient item that heals you. The removal of hunger and sleep changes up the gameplay a lot since you are pretty much just going around getting experience points, leveling up, killing monsters and bosses, and trying to get better loot.

As far as crafting - crafting armor sets is a pretty important part of the game to be able to continue to the lower levels. Newer armor sets give you a higher armor rating and also give you a better HP bonus, but you can also find unique armor as drops from monsters. You can also craft rings using runes and gems.

You guys are all kinda over complicating the answer. All you need to know is that monsters will keep spawning until you kill commander vile, that's why your being overwhelmed, vile is super easy to use cheap strategies also.
Unicron Supreme Jan 12, 2019 @ 10:48am
Ok so i have to kill commander keen and then there will not be a heavy build up of mobs on the surface.

Also am i just completly making my base wrong?

You only really need enough ore/bars to make the armor set, after that you can pretty much just sell anything you mine. There will be new materials to make better armor in the next layer.
