How to swing straight?

Nevermind the lack of backspin. I have a Xbox 360 controller with no issues on other games whatsoever, but swinging in this game is always super funky. It's never a straight line, so I keep hooking, slicing, missing greens, etc.
I use the right stick to swing, and it's not apparent that I'm doing something wrong. I just use my thumb to swing. Is there a better technique or tips to maybe improve the swing direction for me? I tried using the left stick, but my left hand is even worse for this.

I put the controller on my desk standing upright, then use a chess piece hold to move it back and forth, while looking intently at the stick the whole time to check it's a straight up and down. Not as much fun to play that way as you're looking at the stick rather than the golfer on-screen, but it's obviously miles easier to swing straighter (still not truly straight but enough to be within the cone 95% of the time for me) that way.

That sounds like quite a dramatic measure, but seeing how bad I am doing, I guess I'll have to craft such a way too

i have the stick between thumb and firstfinger, better control that way.
