If you're really good you can join associations and win tournaments and make coins that way.
There are a load of associations you can join. Just follow the menu icons in game to find them
If you however suck like I do, then you will never ever win a tournament. You do have to pay an entry fee to tournaments. Your best bet would be to use a controller, because consistency I don't think is possible with mouse....unless you use a device of sorts to keep your mouse shooting straight in back and down shots.
The last tournament I played I think I was like 8 shots behind the second last person.....but I'm having a lot of fun shooting quad bogeys when my mouse shots go haywire :-)))
Just keep in mind two things: First, each course challenge can only be completed once by a single person (so you can't just milk the same one). Second, the number of challenges that are unlocked for a particular course are increased as more people play it.
So l would either go to "Local Match" and look for courses that have a lot of rounds played on them and that are new to you... or (if you haven't already) play through the single player PGA Tour campaign as it will cycle through a lot of the "official" HB courses that should already have all of the challenges unlocked and available.
