Very few current young coders can match the skill of the old guys like John Carmack, John Romero, and Peter Molyneux.
There is always a bot mode. I think it takes 30 (or 40?) players to start a match. If you and only one other human join the queue the other 28 players will all be bots.
They can be deadly but they do act funny sometimes. e.g. continuously running into the same obstruction. Or the top mounted swivel gun swivels at such a downward angle that it keeps shooting into its own roof...continuously.
But you still have to be online to connect to their server(s).
