Are automatic weapons just incapable of doing good damage?
It feels like no matter how much damage I stack on them, they just suck at killing things.

I love the Junk Rifle, probably my favorite weapon, but it just doesn’t feel like it hits very hard. I am noticing the same thing with the other automatic weapons.

Meanwhile, it seems like all of the precision weapons are insanely good at dealing damage, which is fine of course, but why would I ever use an automatic weapon?

Depends on what build you are trying to play with. I find full auto weapons to be fun and rewarding if you build your guardian to take advantage from them. Like commando for example is super fun with auto weapons, or the guardian class, if you go the arsenal bubble route, and have a minigun, or any weapon capable of rapid fire, then that is a blast. Requires a bit of timing with popping the bubble tho

I have been playing Commando but it still feels like with automatic weapons they just tickle enemies. I will continue to try more builds with them but it just feels so discouraging…

There are some good ones. Windmill Rifle is pretty good, so is volcano rifle. And well it's only alright, uzi is fun with point blank and critical madness

They are good with the right build

Most of the precision slow fire rate weapons suck at clearing fodder enemies. All the shield drones, stim drones, little bots of various types, all of these are overkilled big-time by a shot from a precision weapon. Full-auto weapons have a slower time to kill, but they switch enemies much faster as well as being more forgiving on a miss.

There's some steadier ones that feel alright, but I think low accuracy/high recoil weapons just generally lack the power to back it up.

While I like automatic weapons since they can be great just for that extra DPS on top of your damage (especially on bosses), some of them just take too much from what you gain from them (fast firerate, very high recoil like uzi)

Then there's also the part where you can fully build yourself under firerate which is quite fun but you will quickly fold under Iris

Most automatic weapons feel weaker by nature of them doing their damage over time, rather than in bursts. This also makes it somewhat more difficult to get critical hits unless you're at very close range. That being said, automatic weapons shine when using class abilities that fire additional projectiles, like Mini-rockets on Commando. (Elementalist and Engineer have similar abilities but I can't remember the names) and bonus effects that have a chance to proc upon firing such as critical rays or buckshot blasts, as you will be doing many more of them.

You wanted to say "build a fire rate build and fold IRIS in 30 seconds or less":

It's all in the build, guys.

True. I had a Commando manage to get a minigun with Fire on it, plus perks that increase burn, the whole world was set on fire and that thing never stopped firing with the stacks of Fury.

putting an element like shock or fire and stacking fire rate is amazing. The junk rifle is insane, fire rate built engineer shreds bosses with it, and can clear mobs doing so quite well. Depends on how you built your character during the run, whereas most precision weapons just need crit to function at a higher level.

Yeah, they're weak, so you're usually forced into patching it up with something, elemental. The perk of 100% crit with cryo is very very strong, but unlike a lot of other weapons they're not worth using if you dont have good mods on them

Funny cause I find the high fire rate weapons to be the best lol.
