Nah, they removed it, and from what I can tell there’s no perks that give you a third slot, so I’m not sure really.
Two options is all you need. A gun, and a support/melee weapon. Be it a Flaregun for marking, Minion Box/Buddy Bot/Hive for Minions, or for using Shovel/Sword.
Part of the challenge of the game is using what you get, and making choices about what you'll take and leave behind. Having yet another weapon slot will either be left as neglected, or remove the downside of losing your only other weapon slot on Hot potato-esk Perks.
It would also be unbalanced, because the game doesn't intend you to carry an armory around.
I don't think it's 'necessary' but I don't think reintroducing it would significantly hamper balance. It could even come with a downside such as making it take longer to swap weapons.
Maybe this (and similar significant boosts like, e.g., a 5th class perk, again possibly with an added downside) could be an option for in-run purchase with Crystal Powder.
