The wrench icon is the currency for this game that lets you upgrade the basecamp. If you've ever seen purple orbs you pick up, that's a wrench. You can use them unlock new features like being able to take helpful items on each run, picking up a weapon at the start of the first level, and even slightly different playstyles with the unlockable loadouts. Roboquest is pretty generous in that you don't lose them if you don't spend them so feel free to upgrade or save them depending on what you want to unlock next. But upgrading your camp will otherwise be helpful to more successful runs.
There is a one time use item you can find and unlock for an extra life, but it's otherwise a game you make the best decisions you can on each run, learn enemy and boss patterns, and just figure out the way to beat it. I personally feel Roboquest is very skill based so it's not as much about being lucky on pickups. If you haven't noticed, the blue orbs give you experience points toward leveling up on each run. They disappear fast so make sure to keep sprinting and pick them up. The rest is up to you. Keep moving, keep shooting, and keep taking out those "tin cans"!
