Because continuity.
If budget/time is a concern, 3 is the best one, and I continue to think that.
I'd say that 3 is the most fun story wise, BUT it also is the most removed from the lore of Avernum. this also makes it fairly easy to play stand alone.
A2 is the most important story wise. But then, 2 is a lot better after 1, because you can see how the world has changed with time and revisit places and characters.
