I remember testing this out in Avernum: Escape From the Pit long time ago (and finding that at least using the editor disables achievements) but I haven't tested it in the present iteration.

It would be fairly simple test:
1) A profile that does not have the achievement "The Surface, At Last"
2) would create a new party,
3) then just speak to Anaximander,
4) try to use a cheat (say "forgiveme" or "teachmenow"),
5) and go to surface.

The achievement should pop up right away, but if it doesn't, then the cheats disable achievements. Though I find it possible that only some cheats might disable achievements, so maybe some of them (e.g. resetting boats) might be alright. But that would require additional testing. It would be simple though to do that by doing the steps 1-3, saving, and then testing each cheat code separately.

Hmm, that's interesting (and disturbing). I'll try it with an alt account tonight.

I cheat like crazy and still get achievs no problem. Haven't used the forgive me but have added money, healed, restored spell points, and used the character editor. Also in the second game I buffed and mental cured and still got chievos. Don't imagine it would be different in this game. Also in this game I think the code is letsbefriends. Don't see a forgive me cheat on the cheat list.

This. It's a single-player game. If you have more fun using cheatcodes (whether it's routinely like this, or to fix a single mistake like the OP), then you should be able to do so and still get all the achivements. I don't use them, but I'm glad to hear that cheats don't interfere with getting credit.

Arent the achievments supposed to imly a since of accomplishment. What is the point if half the players just cheat to get them? I understand its single player but achievments are generally kind of recognition for accomplishing something in the game.

I can't think of any of achievs in this game you can cheat to get. Still need to solve the plagues, find the spell books, find the locations, ect yourself, cheats don't help with that. The only exception is maybe the hard/torment achievs but those still require a major time sink which in itself is an accomplishment of sorts.

Ok, aside from using a cheat code, how -else- can the town forgive you? Is it just time based?

In the original Exile III game, you had to go and come back after some time (a few weeks, maybe) and the town acted as if nothing had happened.
