About Screen Resolutions and Game Area Sizes
Avernum 3: Ruined World is an old-school icon-based game. It doesn't have a fancy 3-D engine like all the cool kids use. This has advantages and disadvantages.

Because it's just icons, you won't be able to zoom in or rotate the view.

Avernum 3 will run well on very small (1024x600) monitors to big ones. I play on a 2560x1440 monitor and it's great. It should also run fine on really old machines or with weak graphics hardware.

However, there is a maximum play area, so the game won't usually full up really huge monitors. You can increase the game area size in settings. If your monitor is very large, try playing at a smaller resolution.

If your vision is poor and your monitor is large, you can increase the text size in settings. Also try playing the game at a lower screen resolution to make everything bigger.

Is there an engine limitation on why the game doesn't actually set to the resolution you set in windowed mode?

I run 1920x1200. I want to run windowed (borderless windowed tbh but I dont think this engine has that capability) and have the full window. At least I can use borderless window to remove the border.

Also in windowed mode and full screen all the remake games get double cursor. I own this on GoG and have bought Avadon 1-3 and Avernum 1-2 on steam and gog, double cursor on all the games and resolution issue. I run a mutli monitor set up and unless I use cursor lock my cursor can click on other programs/windows etc.

I think most people understand this is a sprite based game that play it and understand that you won't be able to rotate views etc. But multi monitor and windowed support seems to be much more commonplace. Again not sure if its an engine limitation

At that screen size, you can already have most of the dungeon/town onscreen at once. The more spirtes that are onscreen, the longer it takes to render frames, so I cap it to keep the frame rate under control.

I really should consider for the v101 update removing all limits, though. I'm getting enough complaints. Having the whole window be full will still be an option in Settings, though.

So just to clarify, here is the issue in a screenshot and are you saying this might be fixed in an upcoming patch?

I set 1920x1200 windowed in th elauncher but the window is much smaller. The in game gui fits nicely in that window and if I have it full screen, but the window itself is not 1920x1200. So the settings option will be in a later version?

PS- Whoever did the new gui bar did a great job. I think it's the best looking version yet and easy to read.

The game makes the window a tiny bit smaller that the whole window. If I make a game window and don't do that, I get weird mouse interference with the start menu (Windows) and the dock/menu (Mac). If you want the game window to fill the screen, just play full screen. You can Alt-Tab to switch applications.

Thanks for the response and I'm sure it seems simple to just say play full screen but on a multi monitor set up that means if I go to any other window or alt-tab it minimized the game. May not seem like much but it is. It pauses everything to either make the minimized or full screen. It really kills the game experience. At least I know it's how the game is built. Shame it's not able to just be made to fit a full window.

My issue is that playing on full screen does weird things to the action bar/mini map/character icons.

This is the best I've got it so far on my usual 1920x1080 and I'm still losing half the action bar off the bottom of the screen. Weirdly it doesn't show that in the screenshot so here's a photo:

I eventually got a good one on 1600x900, however it doesn't really like the intro on that and tabs out to the desktop repeatedly until the menu is available.

WHen this happens, it tends to be because the monitor is reporting to the game the wrong desktop size, causing the game to make a window too big. I suggest experimenting with different resolutions or playing in a window.

Personally, I play on WQHD at a 1080p resolution. It's worked well enough for me and it's miles above the A3 2003 experience.

Did we actually play games that limited the view area to a portion of the screen with an entire border around it once?

...Never mind. Just forget I said anything.

The original problem didn't affect me, but i have 2 monitors, and the game isn't true full screen as my mouse arrow keep escaping to the second monitor during the game. Can that be fixed?

The only way I can get a proper useable control panel and display everything including map is windowed. A shame there is no borderless windowed full screen.

It's not. It's because you ignore windows' UI size setting (or whatever it's called in English). The game only works when it's 100%. You force us to change it every time we launch the game, and then change it back when we close it.
On top of that, the screen ratio is 4/3, whatever you do, which is a shame in an era most people have wide screens.

I messed up the resolution and now I can't get passed the initial screen. I selected the "Don't show this at startup." This is what I seen when I start up.

I have tried uninstalling it, and every trick imaginable to get it to run in windowed mode.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

*edit:
And just to clarify, the mouse won't track below the middle of the screen.

In such cases, you usually just delete the config file, whatever it's called for this game. It's also often possible to just open it and edit what's wrong with notepad.

From what I could find, there isn't a config file for this one. There is a .dat file and that's it.

Sry to necro a post...yet for ANYONE who requires the basic fix for this use one of the many FREE upscalers such as Magpie. Currently I am playing at 4K windowed and this program is UPSCALING that last little bit of the screen I require to get it to FULL 4k. So you can use the many paid programs on steam to do the same thing, or download the FREE one from sourceforge (only do trusted sources and scan anyways) I suggested. It works perfect and I am about to stream my first hour or so in this game with OBS from steam games platform (beta version).
