FAQ: Help! I'm Getting Killed!
Spiderweb Software's games are not killer-difficult, but they can be tricky sometimes. If you're getting killed a lot early on (and don't want to go into Settings and change the difficulty to Casual), here are some tips to help you get started.

1. Avernum 3 is HUGELY wide open. You can wander everywhere. Alas, some of those areas are hard. If you enter an area where the monsters are lethal, go closer to start and then explore somewhere else. If you don't know where to go, check your quest journal or go back to Fort Emergence and visit Anaximander.

2. When starting out, don't go to the surface yet. Leave Fort Emergence to the south to enter Upper Avernum. Drop by the goblin and bandit lairs. If bandits on the roads try to shake you down, pay them off. You can go back to get revenge later. Commander Johnson in Fort Emergence gives some really nice quests.

As a general guideline, the further north you go, the stronger you'd better be, above ground or below. There are exceptions. Your mileage may vary. Always assume the DM is trying to kill you.
