Dev said it's a regional pricing issue, I have my own suspicion and opinion, but I'm willing to look the other way if they eventually fix it. I believe the reviews, including mine, will get better once they fix the price.
The game itself seems fine to me, and any and all criticism the game might have can be fixed along the line. The devs seem very responsive so if there's anything that feels off, voice it and chances are it will be heard.
The gameplay is mostly Fell Seal, but with a twist on the class system. It completely foregoes the usual dual class you're used to in the genre and go for something you'd find in mmorpgs; you start in a class, and you advance into one of 2 advanced classes as you progress. Each class has its own skill tree you can put points in. Think Ragnarok Online. This could be hit or miss, it's not an innate good or bad, just different. Game has full controller support.
Enemies for some reason dont display the skill they are using.
Cant see enemy placement when you're placing your units.
It's just missing a handful of features you would expect from this genre.
For pros? The music is interesting and the portraits are pretty.
Other than that the game doesn't offer any different kind of experience. It's a good foundation but I wish there were more unique experiences that competition doesnt offer.
Luckily the cons I have can be fixed with future updates. Besides maybe the job system which is pretty disappointing. I love mixing skills together.
Pro’s: Music is interesting and different. Nostalgia is on par with FFT. Story is pretty interesting (so far). Artistic direction is fresh. Unlike others I don’t care that job class and subclasses are less than say FFT, it’s still checking the box off for the genre. Pixel quality is good.
Con’s: Cannot rotate the camera 360 (only zoom in and out), enemies do not drop any loot after falling and their countdown ends. Although music is interesting sometimes it doesn’t fit the specific situation (sounds a little to old timey detective/crime inspired), but I’ll point back to a pro that it is interesting and different. Have no idea where the enemy will start combat so it feels blind placing your squad.
My overall impression is it’s worth the money and scratches that itch if you like FFT and Ogre etc. I can see another playthrough where I do different sub classes. The Devs are responsive and listening to feed back, so I can see updates and QoL features that improve on the foundation. Thats my take on the game presently.
But I'm hesitant because of the feedback. Games need some QoL, some speed options, quick and intuitive menus. When everything moves in slow motion it just saps the fun right out of the game. I never would've made it through Fell Seal without setting the walking and battle animation speeds to at least 150%.
The class system actually sounds fine. With 2 promotion options and skill trees you still get some customization, but without needing to grind all the different jobs to mix and match skills.
