No judgement, mind you, I'm just curious. The tactical battles are like 90% of the point, so skipping it seems like you'd be better off not playing.
This is fair! I was assuming AA would have a lot of side/filler battles you can take part in. But knowing that its a very story focused game, I can understand why it doesn't have an auto battle option. I still want to get the game, it looks great, and I love SRPG like Final Fantasy Tactics, and Tactics Ogre.

There definitely ARE filler/side missions, but it's to a much less degree than most games. You can take "contracts" which are essentially side quests, but as far as I know there are no random encounters or generic "skirmish" missions.
The side quests DO have minimal story to them, but they have pre-set rewards and can only be done once. And as far as I know, these "contracts" are the only non main story battles. :)
